BINOCULAR VISION DISORDERS

In order to navigate the world efficiently, the eyes must work together as a coordinated team, accurately aligning, focusing and processing visual information (1,2). This complex interaction between the eyes and brain is known as binocular vision. Normal binocular vision improves our perception within a three dimensional world, by optimising clarity, depth perception, spatial awareness, and motion perception (3-6). When these systems do not function optimally, patients may experience a range of symptoms that can affect educational performance, workplace productivity, sporting ability, visual comfort and quality of life (7-9).

Binocular vision disorders encompass a broad group of conditions affecting eye alignment, focusing and eye coordination. These conditions may occur in children, adolescents or adults, and often remain undiagnosed because symptoms can be mistaken for learning difficulties, poor concentration, or fatigue (10, 11). Whilst many patients with binocular vision disorders have excellent eyesight when measured on a standard letter chart, they may nevertheless experience significant difficulty performing sustained visual tasks efficiently and comfortably.
