HYPEROPIA

The visual system encompasses more than the ability to see objects clearly- our eyes are required to dynamically maintain precise focus across a variety of tasks at different focal points, from reading messages and working on digital devices to driving, studying, competing in sports and engaging in social interactions (1-4). When the eyes are required to work harder than necessary to achieve clear vision, symptoms such as eyestrain, headaches, fatigue and fluctuating clarity often develop (5,6). One of the most common causes of this visual stress is hyperopia, also known as long-sightedness (7-9).

Hyperopia occurs when light entering the eye is focused behind the retina rather than directly upon it. As a result, the accommodative system must exert additional focusing effort to maintain clear vision. Unlike some other refractive errors, hyperopia is not always immediately obvious. Many hyperopic individuals, particularly children and younger adults, are able to compensate for the refractive error by continuously engaging their focusing system.
